My hair is more Roadkill than Revlon

After talking to a friend about my lacklustre hair recently she revealed that a simple trim of her fringe can buy her another month before she must head back to the hairdresser for a complete cut and colour. Apparently the small touch up extends the life of her bigger, more expensive do from eight weeks to 12 thus increasing her mane's value for money.

I was very intrigued to hear more from my knowledgeable friend since my head hasn't seen the inside of a hairdresser for longer than I care to admit. Let's just put it this way, the closest my hair has come to a pair of scissors, foil and a spine-tingling head massage is when E smears soggy wheatbix across the top of my head to create what I like to call my Cute Cereal Comb-Over. Va va puke!

We discussed colour, cut, length, to fringe or not to fringe, preferred brands for shampoo and conditioning, and how regrowth can be the most ghastly, terrifying experience known to womankind the world over except, however, when others try to convince you they can't see it.

She made me laugh because it was true. Women feel compelled to lie to other women about regrowth. More specifically, that it (somehow?!) suits them.

You know those moments when you complain to girlfriends about not being to the hairdresser for donkies and your hair has reached that out-of-control, only-wear-it-in-a-ponytail stage? Despite presenting all your best evidence, your girlfriends somehow manage to win the argument with a well executed rebuttal along the lines of, 'No! Where? I can't see anything! You can't even notice it. Honestly, it looks very natural.' When really what they wanted to say was, 'Yes you have regrowth and you do need to see the hairdresser immediately, preferably sooner, but it's not so bad that I won't be seen with you...yet.'

When my mates tell me they can't see the four inches of dark brown hair taking over my blonde head faster than a cruel dictator, every inch of my being knows they are telling a white lie. They know I know they are lying, but I'm happy to accept their position because it allows me to wrangle several more weeks out of visiting my overpriced hairdresser, where - when finally there - I will be so guilt ridden I hadn't booked in earlier, I will be obligated to blame being a busy Mum instead of telling her the truth which is that I just couldn't be bothered getting off the couch and missing an episode of The Circle.

I digress. My point is, regrowth is work of the devil designed to have me utter blasphemies against colour itself. It's like a fungus taking over that which only very expensive remedies can fix. Remedies I can no longer justify to my partner when my son needs new winter clothes and the car needs a service.

Imagine if regrowth was a contagious disease. Women on public transport would run faster than Usain Bolt, trying to get to the next train carriage to escape the wrath that is disgusting, ugly-fying regrowth. I can hear it now, ‘OMG! Move. She has regrowth and I can’t catch that. I’ll die! GET OUT OF MY WAY’, the gorgeous well-groomed girl would scream as she ran knocking over elderly men and women in her wake to avoid the fatal toxic poison that is non-coloured hair.

Despite the hatred I have towards regrowth (my own that is, on others it is perfectly acceptable because you can hardly see it anyway) it seems two-tone hair is the colour de jour.

From Drew Barrymore to Erin Wasson and many others, a half-brown, half-blonde head is in. Not just in like cute ballet flats or Zooey Deschanel, but a highly desirable style! And while this expensive grungy look has been around for many a month, even year, I still can't manage to utter the words, 'I'm growing it out like SJP' from fear that what I'll actually end up with will look more Roadkill Slick than Revlon Colorsilk.

Sadly my friend and I didn't get a chance to discuss blow-drying techniques, designer hair straighteners or celebrity styles, but one day I'm sure we'll look back and laugh at the memories of the hair we use to have on the way to get our purple rinses. Three months late of course.

Real Estate Heaven

The time has come for Teach, E and I to pick up sticks and set up a new home in a family-friendly house.

We've resided in our current unit for close to two years, which isn't long at all, but I feel like we've done our time here. Then again, I do have a knack of getting itchy feet every 18 months to change postcodes and this time is no different.

Actually, it is slightly different. Now we have a child to consider. A crawling, almost walking, toddler who wants to be in everything, discover everything and chew everything. E needs space, comfort and security - major factors in our search for a new home.  Let's be honest, he's not the only one.

So yesterday I started the mind-numbing task of hunting for our new abode. The number of tired, old, slightly leaning to the left, decrepit houses available to rent in our price range was terrifying. The more I looked the more I remembered how much I detest searching for real estate (especially rentals). The level of crud you have to wade through before hopefully finding something suitable is ridiculous. And hey, if you don't need a tetnus shot before you move in all the better!

Don't misunderstand me, I'm all for shabby-chic and getting my hands dirty to fix 'er up and make 'er feel like home, but the guff I came across yesterday would be better off making a date with a blow torch, or better yet, a bulldozer.

After more than three cups of tea, a packet of chocolate cookies and two hours of searching rental websites, I logged off feeling sick to the stomach (both physcially and emotionally), deflated and a touch devastated. I realised my search for real estate heaven is going to be mammoth!

I don't think I have high expectations. Surely somewhere in this town I can find a clean, french colonial, four bedroom, two bathroom, air-conditioned house located on luscious grounds with manicured gardens, a pool, study, library, home cinema, wide verandahs, views to the city (but not a deal breaker), plus space for E to play all for the same price as our current rental?

What! No?

Ok, Ok! I know I'm dreaming. Dreaming of the home I will most likely never own. Dreaming of a real estate heaven only ever experienced by those with celebrity pay cheques or inside trading links to Wall Street.

Yes, I understand it's for my own health that I need to search for something more realistic. Sheesh, you're such a kill-joy! But before I trudge back to reality can I please spend a little more time in la la land and imagine myself cooking a delicious family meal here...

and teaching E to swim here...
 or relaxing with Teach here...

and hosting friends here...

or maybe curling up with a good book here?

Well, if it's good enough for Bridget Jones, it's good enough for me.

Groovy Manna

For as long as I can remember, I always imagined myself as a groovy Mumma when I grew up. You know the type, where my son's friends would love to come over and hang out because 'You're Mum is, like, totes cool. We can stay up all night and eat ice cream out of the container,' etc... I wouldn't dis their music choices with 'What is this noise anyway?' because I love a little funky doof doof or bang bang music when the occassion calls for it, and I'd have my finger on the pulse of what was happening in society from Twitter, to Facebook, to YouTube, to iPads, to, um, others.... I'd never lose touch of what was happening, because I simply couldn't imagine getting (insert shiver down the spine here)...OLD!

I Spy Winter...

I spy with my little eye the new Winter Kate S/S '11 Lookbook. Yippee!

Hollywood starlet and reformed wild child Nicole Richie is behind the boho designer label and is often captured wearing its trademark pieces - longsleeved tops/coats, high-waisted shorts, oversized sunglasses and peeptoe pumps. I've always admired how Nicole seemed to transform herself (with the help of an expensive stylist) overnight and make people take notice. Now she's selling that style across the world and I'm LOVING it. Unfortunately as it's designed by a hollywood star, the price tags are just as ritzy. Nevertheless, here are the items I'm admiring from far far away...

Celebrity Mummas & Bubbas

This week's issue of Who magazine features exclusive images of US pop star P!NK (born Alicia Moore), her husband Carey Hart and their gorgeous new daughter Willow Sage Hart. Willow was born a little more than 3 weeks ago on 2nd June. She is a beautiful little girl and you can tell from the lovely shots just how smitten Pink and Carey are with their bundle of joy.

The same mag also includes a How They've Grown story of celebrity parents with their kids. It features all the A-list stars we've followed over the years such as Nicole Richie with Harlow and Sparrow, Courtney Cox Arquette with Coco, Jessica Alba with Honour, Neil Patrick Harris with his twins Harper and Gideon and many more. All the shots are taken while the little ones are out and about playing or generally just going about their day with their Mum or Dad. It's quite cute. Nothing bad about that at all. Or so I thought.

Pink, Carey & Willow Sage Hart - An authorised photo

Yep, it all seemed innocent enough at first glance. Pink is celebrating the birth of her baby girl and sharing it with the world...but behind the smiles it seems she didn't have much choice but to share this joyful time with us. Pink could provide a range of personal images of her new family for the world to devour or be forced to fight off paparazzi hunting the couple for the first photo of Willow and, in turn, make A LOT of cashola. You see another word for 'ka-ching' in La La land is 'celebrity baby'.

I only know this because Pink has posted a very heart felt letter on her website to ask paparazzi to respect Willow's privacy. The fascination we (voyeurs like me) have with celebrities and their off duty lives has grown so much paps will stop at nothing to get the best, most exclusive photos.

It reads:

Due to the unsettling, surprisingly aggressive and unsafe measures that the paparazzi seem to be willing to go to in order to secure that "first shot" of our daughter--stalking us, chasing us in cars and sitting outside of our home all day and all night, as new parents Carey and I decided that we would release personal photos of our Willow, and donate all of the money to charity.
Those 'personal photos' were provided to People (Who's sister publication in the US) and are now available around the world for everyone to see.

It's not the first time a celebrity has tried to beat media at their own game in a bid to diffuse the international and very well paid hype around their newborn. Brangelina negotiated a tidy sum for the rights to photos Brad took of Angie with Knox and Viv (arguably the most expensive images of celeb babies to date) which was then donated to charity. Tomkat didn't show Suri in public until she appeared with her parents on the cover of Vanity Fair and our own Dannii Minogue tweeted a self-styled pic of her with partner Kris Smith and their several day old son Ethan to squash the media frenzy from Oz to the UK.

Why are we so fascinated with famous babies? Does knowing Pink, Angelina, Dannii, Katie and all the rest go through nine months of pregnancy and labour just like us 'normal' people somehow make our experience easier or - god forbid - acceptable or cool? It's not uncommon for magazines to publish a 'Who's Next?' story displaying the latest tabloid shots of female celebs at varying stages of gestation. Then it's the birth, their name, what they wear, how much was spent on their birthday party and so on and so on...

Yes of course babies are beautiful and their arrival in the world is a blessing, but my confusion lies in what seems to be our insatiable apetite for these kids. Does it seem wrong to anyone else that millions of dollars is paid for images of children because their Mum or Dad happens to make a movie or play in a band?

I'll admit my new found protect-the-celeb-baby stance is contradictory. I love my trashy mags and pics of celebrities. Geesh, I've even got images of three inspirational ladies in the left hand column...but after reading Pink's letter and being a super protective Mumma myself, I've started re-evaluating my desire for these images.

While admiring Actors, Musicians, TV Personalities, Reality Stars etc.. is one thing I completely understand and support Pink and Carey's position in protecting their baby girl's innocence, identity and life from potential danger.

It wasn't until I read Pink's letter that I even considered papped images of them as an invasion of her family's privacy. Why would I? I see pics like this everyday. One with her baby girl is just another one, surely?! I don't know her personally, why would I care? But I realised, I would be horrified, or worse still scared for our lives, if someone followed Teach and I while we were walking with E. We would do everything in our power to stop someone from setting up camp outside our home to take photos of us. Why does Pink's job as a Musician and Entertainer give anyone the right to follow her movements 24/7 for the sake of one picture of her child?

While I don't believe we will ever see an end to unauthorised videos and images of celebrities (Princess Diana's death proved that), I now think we should draw the line at celeb bubbas. Being stalked to the point of almost causing harm for a photograph is beyond moronic and should be illegal. Pink says it brilliantly:

In EVERY other country that I recall, children's faces are blurred out in magazine photos. Why is USA the only country that continues to financially incentivize intrusive paparazzi behavior to capitalize on photos of babies, infants and children? Why is this acceptable to any of us? Why is this even legal? These are questions I ask myself as a new parent. Why are celebrities/public figures having to seek restraining orders to keep strange grown men with still and video cameras from sitting perched outside of their children's pre-schools and elementary schools, preying on little innocent kids? After all, if a stranger was sitting outside of a school taking photographs of random little girls and boys, wouldn't he be arrested? Or, at least in Philadelphia, he would have to face a more primal sort of recourse. But because it's the child of a celebrity, somehow it's okay? I'm just not sure what is wrong with us as a society, that we do more than tolerate this, but our appetite for it seems insatiable. We buy these pictures. We buy these magazines that publish these paparazzi pictures. WHERE DOES IT STOP?
Unfortunately for Pink and many more celebrity Mummas (and Poppas of course) we all know it will only stop when there is no money to make from it. It's the way of the world.

The First Lady: My New 'Savnista'

Michelle Obama's style is very well documented, photographed and analysed. Ever since she stepped on to the stage in that stunning one-shoulder white dress at her husband's inauguration in 2008, the First Lady has been America's new darling of fashion. Let's face it, there hasn't been another President's wife that has warranted so much attention since the ever-glamorous Jackie Kennedy - quiet rightly!

Now I don't normally take much notice of Michelle's outfits. Yes I buy my fair share of trashy mags and sit on People for hours skimming through all the celeb pics like any other normal (?) woman does, but Michelle's fashion hasn't been that high on my must-see-odomator. I'm not sure why. Maybe I see her as a bit to Mumsy for me - I'm holding onto my Independant Woman ideologies with gritted teeth and a monkey grip - or perhaps because she's associated to Politics? While I admire her style and taste I usually relate more to Reese Witherspoon (another Celeb/Girl crush I'll have to discuss another day).

That is until I saw this pic and discovered that her top is actually a $30 Gap dress. Nice work Mrs Obama! You've shown ladies across the world, Mothers or not, that style does not have to come with a large designer price tag.

I shouldn't be surprised really. Michelle once wore a white Gap tshirt to lunch with former First Lady Nancy Reagan and caused quite the stir. I knew I loved Gap tshirts for a reason!! I have several in a range of colours at home, but now I can honestly say I have the same 'outfit' as the First Lady - a stretch I know but I'm so going there!

Anywho... I'm proud to say Mrs Obama has found a new place in my heart as a savnista (savvy fashionista...get it?) and has inspired me to wear my Gap clothes over the weekend with pride and pretend I'm as super-stylish.

Happy Friday.

A Minogue Week

Many of you know I am a celeb addict - but never more so than with the divine Ms Minogue. It's a wee girl/celeb/musician crush I've had for as long as I can remember (including many years annoying my two older brothers singing Kylie tunes on the top of my lungs around the house, in the car, in my room, in the bathroom etc... etc...). So in honour of Her Royal Hotness finally unveiling her Aphrodite Les Foilles Tour in Brisbane this magnificent Friday, here is a very small selection of my favourite and fabulous Kylie moments...

Ooh La La...

I am an avid reader of Gwyneth Paltrow's newsletter GOOP. I love getting an inside look at her delectable life and daydreaming...what if?!

This week's issue is themed GET and has GP dressed in various outfits she likes for the UK Summer. Each one is broken down so you can easily purchase the whole look or individual pieces via Net-a-Porter.

Wow, looking this celeb-tastic has never been so easy!!

If I had GP's budget (perhaps that should be no-budget and a black Amex) these are the items I'd love to buy for Winter. Ooh La La....

Here comes the McQueen

While HRH Prince William and Catherine Middleton were whisked away in a helicopter for their first weekend as a married couple, I was at the newsagency buying every newspaper and magazine to satisfy my insatiable appetite for the glorious couple – in particular Ms Middleton.
I have to admit, I didn’t see this new obsession coming. When their engagement was announced, I was really pleased for them. I love a good wedding bash as much as the next chick, but excited? Nope, surely it’s just another celebrity wedding.  Oh, how wrong I was.
