Time in Timaru

The Lighthouse overlooking Caroline Bay, Timaru.
Teach, E and I returned home on Monday after three fabulous days (plus two days of travelling) in New Zealand. We flew across the Tasman to witness two wonderful friends tie the knot in Timaru, the Groom's birth place.

Timaru (a Maori name meaning 'the shelter') is a straight two-hour drive from Christchurch on the Main South Road on the South Island. The architecture, parks and man-made harbour combine to create a stunning coastal town and a spectacular spot for a wedding. Teach and I couldn't get over the pristine colour of the ocean at Caroline Bay where our friends held their ceremony. Despite reaching a hot 30 degrees (according to locals) we could tell just by looking at it how icy cold the water was. Fra-fra-freeeezing!

Lunch with a view of Caroline Bay.
Off to practice my reading before the ceremony.
From the farm-fresh food, to the fantastic range of local wines available everywhere, to the achingly beautiful sceneary, country hospitality and of course the splendid wedding celebrations - our getaway was perfect.

I was a touch nervous about how our little man would cope with the fast and furious trip abroad, especially after our memorable trip to Darwin, but he's turning into quite the traveller. So much so he charmed all the ladies who crossed his path. With one toothy grin he had them playing games, laughing and offering to do anything we needed...He's one smooth operator.
Homeward bound.

Hopefully we'll get another chance to explore the South Island in more detail one day, because after that tasty morsel Teach and I are both obsessed to get back as soon as possible. If you've ever contemplated a trip across the ditch, the time to hesitate is through. Go! We can't recommend it enough.
